“It’s definitely disappointing,” Ramirez told Variety‘s Marc Malkin at the Academy Museum Gala Saturday night in Los Angeles. I consider him one of the most extraordinary film artists of his generation. Variety reported in August that losses could exceed seven figures. His previous features include Far From HeavenI’m Not There and Carol, with the latter co-starring Phoenix’s longtime partner, Rooney Mara.

“The audition process was extensive, and so what I walked away with that was just the artistic validation of throwing down opposite of [Phoenix] in this chemistry read… There was a moment that I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve arrived as a performer.'”

When asked if the film is still happening with director Haynes, Ramirez replied, “The most recent update is ‘hopefully.'”

Phoenix had developed the screenplay with Haynes and Jon Raymond, but, according to a source close to the production, the actor got “cold feet.”

The movie, produced by Killer Films and backed by sales agent M2K Film, had already sold to international distributors ahead of production.

Pedro Pascal Eyed to Lead Todd Haynes’ Gay Romance After Joaquin Phoenix’s Abrupt Exit

Pedro Pascal is circling the lead role in director Todd Haynes‘ gay romance feature De Noche, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The project made headlines last August when Joaquin Phoenix dropped out of the starring role just five days before filming was set to begin in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The actor has not publicly discussed the reasons behind his departure, with a source previously telling THR that the movie’s team was “devastated.”

Pascal recently starred with Phoenix in Ari Aster’s Eddington and was also seen this summer in Materialists and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Pascal’s forthcoming features include next year’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, and he earned his latest Emmy nomination for HBO’s The Last of Us earlier this year.

Haynes most recently helmed Netflix’s 2023 title May December, which starred Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay.

In addition, entire sets had been built in Guadalajara before Phoenix’s last-minute exit. Phoenix, who had been instrumental in developing the film and bringing it to Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler’s Killer Films, abruptly exited the production just days before filming.

In the most cinematic twist of fate, Pedro Pascal is now circling the lead role, potentially stepping into a part once reserved for Joaquin Phoenix, as reported by Deadline.

According to sources close to the production, plans are underway to restart filming in early 2026 in Guadalajara, Mexico, with Pascal currently in negotiations to star opposite 'Top Gun: Maverick' actor Danny Ramirez.

If confirmed, the pair will portray a corrupt police officer and his younger lover who flee 1930s Los Angeles for Mexico, a love story set against the backdrop of crime, passion, and the political shadows of the era.

The revival of 'De Noche'

The collapse of 'De Noche' in 2024 made headlines through the indie film community.

More than a year after it collapsed, days before cameras were set to roll, 'De Noche,' the long-awaited gay romance from acclaimed director Todd Haynes, is finding new life. The idea that his time was wasted and that a movie is not a result of those years of working closely with Joaquin, that is the tragedy to me and that I can’t get over.”

Haynes, who last directed the Cannes hit 'May December 'in 2023, had remained hopeful about a resurrection.

And now, with Pascal potentially attached, it seems the tragedy could become triumph.

Danny Ramirez, who had originally signed on to co-star with Phoenix, is still attached.

Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler are producing for Killer Films.

Pedro Pascal and Danny Ramirez could play lovers in Todd Haynes' gay romance 'De Noche'

What was once a heartbreak for cinema might just become one of the most anticipated queer films of the decade.

But Phoenix dropped out of the untitled project just five days before shooting began in Guadalajara, Mexico. The NC-17-rated film was set to focus on two men in love in the 1930s who flee L.A. and go to Mexico.

Danny Ramirez on Joaquin Phoenix Pulling Out of Todd Haynes’ Gay Romance Movie: ‘It’s Definitely Disappointing’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Danny Ramirez was set to star alongside Joaquin Phoenix in a gay romance film from director Todd Haynes.

Haynes received an Oscar nomination for his screenplay for 2002’s Far From Heaven. Pascal does not have a deal in place and has been eyed for the role since late last year, though it is now just coming to public light. According to Vachon, Phoenix was a no-show on set for two weeks before the plug was pulled.

While speculation started, Phoenix himself remained silent, telling press at Venice last year, “It just doesn’t feel like that would be right,” when asked to explain his decision.

“It’s definitely a very complicated situation,” Ramirez said. “I am not sure how that would be helpful.
