“From a thematic point of view, I like the fun stuff. During the show’s seventh season (its first on ABC), Buck came out as bisexual after catching feelings for Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.), a former member of the 118 and the ex-fiancé of Buck’s ex-girlfriend Abby (Connie Britton).

Shortly after Buck’s love life development, Stark took to social media to defend his character from critics.

In season three, Buck's sister Maddie set up a poker night with her partner Chim, Buck and Josh Russo from dispatch, and after Josh jokes that if he "didn't know better I'd think you were setting us up," Maddie quips that she would never set Josh up with her brother, to which no-one – including Buck – reminds the table that he is straight.

Henrietta “Hen” Wilson, agreed with Stark, telling Swooon that same month, “I would actually love to see Buck grounded in a relationship and experiencing it in the fullest way, someone who would probably extract that best side of him like an Abby, but with the freedom that he now has to be the fullest version of himself with a Tommy.”

Why 9-1-1's historic decision to make Buck queer was seven years in the making

For seven seasons,9-1-1 fans have been calling on the showrunners to make the queer-coded character Evan 'Buck' Buckley explicitly queer – and to my huge surprise, it's finally happened.

“I don’t know, maybe one day,” he said. Many have also argued that the character has long been queer-coded – when a character's sexual orientation is implied by significant subtext without being stated outright – using canonical moments from across the seven seasons in their arguments. You know, there’s obviously stuff there and there’s a chemistry between us,” Stark, who […]

Being a fan favorite character is nothing new for Stark; known for going heart first into any and every scenario, Buck has been beloved from the show’s beginning and has remained an integral part of the Station 118 family.

Season seven episode four, 'Buck, Bothered and Bewildered', saw the character grow jealous over Eddie Diaz's new friendship with Tommy Kinard, only for Buck to understand by the end that it was never Eddie's friendship he was worried about but rather Tommy's attention, and the pair kissed.

I have criticized the show in the past for not being consistent with its storytelling however there were fun deep cuts for the longtime fans, including callbacks to various queer-coding moments, such as Maddie and Buck's conversation about Tommy in her home, which harkened back to when Buck first gushed over Eddie in season two and she called him out for his "boy crush".

"We're already renewed for Season 8 ... I just play him truthfully.”

Oliver Stark and Ryan Guzman are very aware that 9-1-1 fans are hoping to see their characters, Buck and Eddie, get together — and they’ve opened up about whether there’s potential for a romance on multiple occasions.

“So in these moments when Buck needs someone to show up, obviously Tommy is there, but then there’s also the stability that he knows, that pillar of stability, which has been, and will continue to be, [Eddie]. Buck is, as he often is, going through something and spiraling a little bit, and he tends to lean on those around him when that starts to happen.

“And one of my biggest joys of playing Buck over the past eight/nine seasons is getting to tell the story of him discovering his bisexuality. “It’s not something that is in my near future, but it’s something that I could see myself open to, or certainly, like, even if it’s not directing, being in some kind of role that helps craft the story.”

While directing may have to wait, Stark is still having a blast portraying Buck — and emphasized how special it is for him that people have been “clinging” to the character for eight seasons now.

“I know people don’t always think this, but there’s a lot of myself in [Buck],” he said.

Maddie is obviously one of those people.”

Spiraling, Stark said, is something Buck will continue to do throughout season 8, and the actor foreshadowed big changes he’s excited to watch play out.

“Episode 6, I think, is maybe going to change the path that Buck is on a little bit, change his trajectory.

Buck's personal life has always been a core part of his narrative, and the character has sadly felt like he's been on the same "journey of self-discovery" for several seasons, looking for love in all the wrong places and giving himself away to others when he gets nothing in return. As for those haters, he got them back in the best way possible.

“It’s just such an honor to get to be a part of telling this story, so thank you guys,” he said.

Stark has portrayed the fan-favorite firefighter since 9-1-1 premiered on Fox in 2018.
