But take a look! When Dorothy arrives in the beautiful Technicolor world of Oz, she finds solace in a group of outsiders like herself coming together to protect her. All her writing should be read in Sarah Connor’s Terminator 2 voice over.

I’vebeena fan of the “Wicked” franchise for, well, long enough that you should address me as your queer elder.

But it didn’t go that way, which I find weirdly refreshing. I am obsessed with Colman’s love story with his husband, Raúl Domingo, who he has been married to since 2014. Marissa Bode (Nessarose), Bowen Yang (Pfannee) and Bronwyn James (ShenShen) are all queer actors.

So, there’s no doubt The Wizard of Oz and Wicked belong to the LGBTQ+ community, and have connected so deeply to the queer community for years.

Party Dyke Legend!

Sharon D. Clarke

Sharon D. Clarke is a heavily accoladed UK stage actress, and she voices Dulcibear, the bear nurse who raises Elphaba since her father is an asshole who hates his green child. The ending of For Good was really so much more about the Glinda/Elphaba relationship than it was about anything else.

Marissa Bode

Marissa Bode is also queer!

Whether you are a gay person who loves the Glinda/Elphaba relationship, or someone with no ties whatsoever to this context, it’s clearly been made for anyone to enjoy and feel connected, and will continue to for generations to come. The song is thought of a gay anthem just like The Wizard Of Oz’s “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”.

The Movies Feature Numerous Queer Actors

And when it comes to the cast of the Wicked movies, the production has stayed true to the queer history of the title by casting predominantly LGBTQ+ actors in many of the main roles.

It seems like a waste to have Colman Domingo in a movie where we don’t even get to see his face, but alas! I love that BOTH Thropp sisters are played by queer actresses, especially since BOTH Thropp sisters have baby gay vibes (Nessa/Boq are so closeted dyke4fag).

Bode is in a relationship with writer Lauren Brooks.

Love big enough to hold both the insinuation of romance and also its absence. They did Chappell Roan-inspired couples costumes for Halloween this year!

In an interview with Gay Times, Bode said of the first Wicked movie: “This movie is for everyone, but the girls and gays are definitely going to be seated for sure!” And say that!

In Wicked: For Good, Bode gives a truly incredible performance as Nessa, who has a bit of a complicated villain arc.

And that is unsurprising to me, a former musical theater kid who somehow made it through performing arts high school without coming out but who was surrounded by homosexuals at every turn on stage.

Cynthia Erivo

Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba in Wicked, came out as queer in British Vogue in 2022.

And no, Pfannee and ShenShen don’t seem to fall into the stereotypical “gay best friend” category at all — I mean, perhaps most notable because Glinda’s a little bit in the closet according to, you know, everyone.

We don’t really need a lovestruck hero lusting after Grande’s bee-stung lips. Someone turn THAT into a musical!!!!!

The Story Behind How Wicked Connects So Deeply With The LGBTQ+ Community

This Pride Month, we continue to celebrate the representation of LGBTQ+ people in media here on CinemaBlend as the month itself was created as a way to commemorate the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots.

That has closeted musical theater gay written all over it, and I should know.

James is married to Katherine-Alice, who founded a nonprofit that promotes accessibility in the arts in Yorkshire.

Yang and James answered some wonderfully gay questions from Gay Times about their characters, including which character would stay at the gay club all night, to which both answered ShenShen.

Or perhaps because a novelist can't write every scene, perhaps when the lights were out and the novelist was out having a smoke in the back alley, the girls had sex in the bed on the way to the Emerald City. In the film, the relationship between the two feels like it could easily veer into classic enemies-to-lovers territory. LGBTQ+ scholar Nathaniel Frank said (via EW) because she “compared herself to a wind-up doll, manufactured by adults for their entertainment” and was “was never able to really be herself.

I’m just saying, who cares if two femmes kiss when they could take down Oz’s whole oppressive regime? Can we not be so desperate for personal love that we’re willing to forget about collective liberation?

While ”Wicked” doesn’t fully deliver on the collective liberation front — this is just Part 1, after all — it does a great job of insinuating that the evil fascists cannot win.

Clarke is married to writer and director Susie McKenna.
