The Legend of Korra, its sequel series, legit helped me on my personal coming-out journey. We can see glimpses of this in the Kyoshi novels, helping complete an interesting picture. While everything feels insane in this era of unrest, let’s all try to be a little more Avatar-like and bring balance to the world. No I’m not (and never) talking about James Cameron’s CGI blue people, but the series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
While the same-sex relationship that capped off the series stopped just short of its protagonist and Asami kissing, the comics and books that have expanded the world of Avatar ever since have done an admirable job showcasing the endless variety of realistic human relationships.
Now its latest installment, The Dawn of Yangchen, makes progress of its own.
Ultimately, the Legend of Korra is just as important now as it ever has been and is well worth the read.

Dawn of Yangchen Gives Avatar a Major LGBTQ+ Win

Avatar: The Last Airbender always made a priority out of its themes of inclusiveness, and the sequel series The Legend of Korra expanded on them by beginning the franchise's long history with LGBTQ+ representation.
She is the founder of Utah’s Graphic Novel Book Club, the first of its kind in Utah, and has hosted monthly meetings since 2011. Not that she needs his permission EVER, but to have your double-ex tell you he supports you two together is next-level allyship.

Representation is so important and is a motivator for anyone who sees themselves on screen. And when they confess their love to each other, albeit infamously turned down due to network constraints, they happily join hands and walk into a new adventure together. And trust me, there’s a lot to be made up for.
From crappy stereotypes to downright bigotry, television can be a bully.
But adding that they were a same-sex queer couple brings the romantic backstory into a more real context. To clarify, the known Avatar cycle has been: Kyoshi - Roku - Aang - Korra. They were said to be the very first earth benders, a major aspect of the famed lore that makes Avatar so beloved. While many fixtures in the franchise have come a long way in presenting relationships that venture away from heteronormativity, the new novel breaks fresh ground by presenting Avatar's first asexual character.

The creative freedom of the Avatar franchise proved relatively limited in its earliest days, with executive mandates regarding censorship infamously stifling just how explicit Korra and Asami's romantic relationship could be in The Legend of Korra.
For Avatar fans seeking more than a story about the Avatar's relationship, Turf Wars has this too. Humanizing characters with believable traits is what has perhaps been the best part of the Avatar's legacy.
