Whereas I think true masculinity comes from having a strong sense of self.”

James said that his character’s personality distinctions from other onscreen heroes is what attracted him to the role in the first place. Those who test into multiple categories are considered divergent, and must keep their lack of classification a secret since the society views them as deadly threats.

“The five factions represent the basic levels of conformity, and a divergent fits into not one of them, but multiple,” said James.

"We're in a world where masculinity, especially with these big spectacle movies, is often pushed by rippling six packs and forcing an image down someone's throat trying to prove masculinity. Garlic butter.”

‘Divergent’s’ Theo James: Movie Could Be Bisexual Allegory, Gay Hero on the Way

While Divergent star Shailene Woodley has excitedly explained that the film is about strong men and women who “diverge from mediocrity!” and “stand up for what you believe in!” could it also be interpreted as a gay allegory?

… Yeah, I can see it. “It’s very hard to tell,” he said. I don’t imagine anyone else playing this part.

“I just think, as a queer person, so many doors have been closed to us for so long, it’s a big step forward that these stories are at least now being told, but I hope that in the future you would also see an out actor be able to tackle a leading role.

“You haven’t really seen that very often.”

He added: “To the naysayers who are like, ‘oh, it’s acting, what about the other way around, are you saying that gay actors should only play gay characters?’

“You look at Kristen Stewart playing Diana, and that was a brilliant performance as well [but] we don’t have that many examples of queer people playing non-queer icons.

“I just want some equal opportunity that’s all.”

In March 2020, the American Idol finalist told Metro that he would like to play George – who died in 2016 aged 53 – should a biopic ever be made.

“That’d be cool,” he said.

In a new interview with The Advocate, the Divergentstud opened up about the flick, which, like the Hunger Games, features a strong female heroine who doesn't need to rely on a man. You know, to me, it would be great to kind of explore George’s life.

“I’d give it a go. While he noted that the film is not a direct commentary on any specific political issue, “it reflects what’s happening in the real world in an obvious way now.”

He’s happy about the effect it’s had on audiences so far.

I think that would be ridiculous.

“Case in point: Scott’s brilliant performance in this film, which is incredibly moving and soulful. But I remember when Queer as Folk came out and thinking, ‘Things are changing. That’s interesting.”

The question arose because the film’s dystopian society divides people into factions based on five virtues — selflessness, peacefulness, honesty, intelligence and bravery — and forces 16-year-olds to choose only one after taking an aptitude test for guidance.

And while some actors in Hollywood may be uncomfortable letting a lady take the lead, James admits he wishes there were more powerful roles for women and even hopes the world will one day embrace an Lgbt action hero. “Part of what drew me to Four was his concept of masculinity, specifically in how he relates to Tris and their relationship.

Specifically, one that highlights bisexuality?

When Woodley’s onscreen counterpart Theo James was asked that question by The Advocate, he pondered the idea and responded, “That’s an interesting parallel to make.

Adam Lambert has clarified a comment he made when he appeared to criticise the suggestion that The White Lotus actor Theo James could play George Michael in a rumoured film about the singer’s life.

During an appearance on the US talk show Watch What Happens Live, Theo was asked if he would be interested in playing the lead in a biopic about the Wham!

So it’s a mutual relationship rather than one based on her fawning for a man.”

He continued, “Her being strong doesn’t de-masculate him, and hopefully that’s pushing a more positive message about gender equality. “I just feel like, we don’t know that much about him. star, admitting he’d jump at the chance and described the Careless Whisper singer as an “icon”.

After the LGBTQ+ news outlet The Advocate shared the story on social media, Adam shot down the idea of Theo playing a gay man on screen.

“Yay another straight man playing a gay icon,” Adam wrote in a since-deleted comment.

The Queen singer and American Idol finalist has now spoken about his initial reaction during an appearance at the Sundance Film Festival, where he is promoting Fairyland starring Scoot McNairy as Steve, a gay dad living in 1970s San Francisco.

“Adam, you recently had some choice words about straight actors playing gay people with regards to Theo James potentially tackling George Michael.

He’s intrigued by her, but respectful of her bravery and her personality traits. I hadn’t connected those dots myself, but there’s definitely truth in there.
